Keyword research is an essential first step
You can't afford to ignore keyword research even when you know your niche really well. I never undertake any project without researching keywords first. And I always encourage my clients to make extensive keyword research a priority. If your site is on the first page of Google for a phrase that is hardly ever searched you won't see much return for your efforts.
Unfortunately most people either ignore or rush this vital first step, either out of ignorance or disinterest. I don’t write headlines, meta tags, blog posts or articles until I know what words to focus on. I know that researching keywords can be tedious and few people actually enjoy doing it, but it's not a good idea to guess at keywords. If you do, guess, don't be surprised if your site is like a ghost town!
Articles, press releases, blog posts, radio shows, podcasts and videos all have titles and descriptions that need to be focused on keyword phrases that people are actually searching for. If you optimize your titles and desctiptions more of your target market will find you.
I can't emphasize this enough, if you want to succeed online you must use keywords that are being searched. How will you know what those keyword phrases are if you don't do keyword research?
If you miss out this vital first step you will waste a lot of time, money and effort. Do yourself a favour and stop shooting in the dark!
And please don't make the mistake of assuming that your web designer knows all about SEO and will make sure your site is optimized for the search engines. Few web designers have any idea about SEO and they are unlikely to do any effective keyword research for you.
If you don't want to do the research yourself hire someone to do it for you. Keyword research will be one of the best investments you ever make.
